Four players joined British Amateur champion Stuart Grehan on this year’s 10-man Great Britain Ireland Walker Cup team.
Englishmen Tyler Weaver, Luke Poulter and Eliot Baker, plus Scotland’s Niall Shiels Donegan all earned automatic berths via the World Amateur Golf Ranking on Wednesday.
All five aforementioned players were part of last year’s squad that lost at Cypress Point.
Grehan, at No. 22 in the world rankings, would’ve been the fifth selection off the world ranking had he not already qualified. That spot will now go to a pick, which should be Scotland’s Connor Graham, who also played last year and is No. 25 in the world.
Other contenders for the final four spots include Englishmen Sam Easterbook, Ben Bolton and Seb Cave; Ireland’s John Doyle, Thomas Higgins and David Howard, the latter of whom qualified for The Open, though is ranked No. 884; and Wales’ Sean David, who recently won the South of Ireland at Lahinch but like Howard has a poor world rank (No. 707).
There could potentially be one more open spot, too, as Weaver, who is ranked second in WAGR, hasn’t competed since the ACC Championship in April because of a back injury and withdrew Tuesday from next week’s U.S. Amateur at Merion.
