Compton meets his heart donor’s aunt ... by chance

Erik Compton finished Sunday with a disappointing 77, but a story shared by CBS’ Jim Nantz overshadowed anything related to Compton’s final-round performance.

As Compton was putting on the 18th green, Nantz detailed that Compton, by chance this week, met a woman whose nephew ended up the donor for Compton’s second heart transplant.

The woman happened to be Compton’s waitress at a restaurant in Dublin and, after learning he was a two-time heart transplant recipient, told him about her nephew who died in a motorcycle accident eight years ago. Compton then asked for the nephew’s name - and found out he already knew it.

It was one year ago that Compton qualified for the 2014 U.S. Open the Monday after the Memorial. He would go on to tie for second at Pinehurst.
