DJ scares Wadkins’ scoring record at Riviera

LOS ANGELES – Lanny Wadkins’ 20-under 264 total to win the 1985 Genesis Open is the longest held 72-hole scoring record among current events, so when Dustin Johnson moved to 20 under with 12 holes to play on Sunday at Riviera Country Club there was plenty of interest.

Well, interest from people other than Johnson.

“I didn’t know anything about a scoring record, but I was just trying to get to 22 [under],” Johnson said following his five-stroke victory over Thomas Pieters and Scott Brown.

After a pause, Johnson asked what the record was?

“Twenty? Next year, next year,” he smiled.

Johnson, who did tie the 54-hole scoring record of 17 under after a third-round 64, made bogey at the ninth, his first since the 13th hole on Thursday, and added two more late miscues on his way to a 17-under 267 total.

Wadkins’ record is safe, at least for one more year.
