Furyk out of FedEx Cup race; Ryder Cup, too?

NORTON, Mass. – Jim Furyk closed his week and his playoffs with a bogey at TPC Boston’s ninth hole, his final frame of the 2015-16 season. Whether his chances to be one of Davis Love III’s four captain’s picks for this year’s Ryder Cup team remains to be seen.

Furyk, who missed the first four months of this year with a wrist injury, had emerged as a potential pick for Love’s team in recent weeks thanks to his tie for second place at the U.S. Open and back-to-back top-10 finishes to close the regular season.

But after playing his final two rounds at the Deutsche Bank Championship in 3 over par, Furyk was projected 86th on the FedEx Cup points list and won’t advance to next week’s BMW Championship.

As a result, Furyk’s chances of being one of Love’s four captain’s picks likely took a hit. Love will announce his first three picks next Monday and the final selection on Sept. 25 after the Tour Championship.

“I haven’t had any discussions with Davis yet [about the picks],” said Furyk, one of Love’s vice captains for this year’s matches. “That would be Davis’ decision; if he is considering me for a captain’s pick then it would be very awkward. If he’s not, it would be real easy to hop right in there with everyone else and discuss who those four guys will be.”

Despite his finish at TPC Boston, Furyk said he was largely pleased with his season after beginning the year with so much doubt because of the injury.

“My game is not far off, but at the moment it’s not where I’d want it to be,” he said. “It’s been tough the last couple of weeks not to press a little bit.”
