Millenial golf fans planning to attend the Open Championship this summer might want to add an unexpected item to their packing list: a sleeping bag.
The R&A announced Tuesday that tournament organizers will offer free, overnight camping when golf’s oldest championship returns to Royal Troon in July. The Marr Rugby Club, a short walk from the course, will be converted into the Open Camping Village, a setup designed to host up to 500 campers per night free of charge.
The site will feature inflatable beds within pre-pitched tents that will accommodate two, four or six people. While the arrangement does not include a ticket to the tournament, on-site parking will be free and food and drink options - not to mention on-site shower facilities - will be available.
It’s all part of an effort to court a younger generation of fans, as the camp site is designed for fans 25 and younger. According to a media release, families will also be allowed to camp, with children ages 16 and under accompanied by a maximum of two adults.
“There will be an exciting festival atmosphere at Troon throughout the week of the Open as thousands of people come together for a true celebration of golf,” said Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, executive director of championships for the R&A. “The Open is a wonderful opportunity for young fans to get up close to their favorite players and we know this will help inspire future generations to pick up a club and take part themselves.”
The Open will be held at Royal Troon in Ayrshire, Scotland, July 14-17.
