PINEHURST, N.C. – Toru Taniguchi has had better days.

The 46-year-old posted an 18-over 88 in the third round of the U.S. Open on Saturday – the worst score in this tournament in seven years.

Following rounds of 72-73, Taniguchi carded one triple-bogey, four double-bogeys, seven bogeys and seven pars – and not a single birdie.

It’s the worst score at a U.S. Open since Sam Walker shot a first-round 89 in 2007 at Oakmont.

It’s also the worst score in three editions of this event held at Pinehurst, the previous high coming from Paul Casey – an 85 in the 2005 opening round.

Overall, this was the seventh round of 88 or worse at the U.S. Open in the last 20 years.
