ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Stacy Lewis looked at the leaderboard near the second round’s end Friday at the Ricoh Women’s British Open impressed with the challengers in the mix.

“You have your usual contenders,” Lewis said. “The tough, gritty players are the ones up there.”

Lewis ought to know. She’s one of them.

With the winds blowing hard over the Old Course at St. Andrews, Lewis put together a gritty even-par 72 to give herself a fighting chance going into the weekend. Lewis is five shots back in her bid to win her third LPGA title this year and her second major.

“You couldn’t get too far from the lead,” Lewis said. “That was kind of my goal.”

Lewis believes the conditions that can torment players over the Old Course make hardly any lead safe on a weekend.

“Your instincts are to say I want to move up the leaderboard, but it’s playing so hard, you can’t force things,” Lewis said. “You just have to stay patient.”
