AKRON, Ohio – Two weeks removed from his British Open triumph, an event he notably won with five wedges in the bag, Phil Mickelson admitted Sunday that his club assortment has not yet been determined for next week’s PGA Championship.

“I was thinking about carrying (driver) in case the wind came up on some particular holes,” said Mickelson, who tied for 21st at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational after a 1-over 71 in the final round.

Adding that his rotation of weapons will likely be decided on a day-by-day basis at Oak Hill, Mickelson explained that he’ll be keeping an eye on the weather forecast to determine which 14 clubs will best help him navigate the venue in Rochester, N.Y.

“If it’s going to be warm, I probably won’t carry a driver. I’ll probably put 64 (degree wedge) in,” noted Mickelson, who tied for 23rd at the 2003 PGA Championship at Oak Hill. “But right now, I’m planning on carrying a driver.”

In choosing between his most-lofted wedge and his least-lofted wood, Mickelson asserted that neither club will be “necessary” at next week’s event. Still, he plans to make a choice at some point in the coming days as he seeks a second consecutive major title.

“I don’t need a 64-degree wedge, and I don’t need a driver,” he added. “But I don’t think I’ll just play with 13 (clubs), either. So I’ll probably carry one of those.”
