JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Rory McIlroy basically said goodbye to golf in the United States until next year with his closing birdie Sunday at the 18th hole at the PGA Championship to finish with back-to-back 74s on the weekend.
McIlroy said he likely won’t tee it up again in this country until he plays the Accenture Match Play Championship next February, when he expects to be a PGA Tour member and have a home in South Florida as his American base.
That doesn’t mean McIlroy is ready to leave the United States just yet. Tennis star Caroline Wozniacki is scheduled to play in Cincinnati next week. McIlroy started dating her last month. He said he planned to head to Cincinnati after his round Sunday.
‘I hear it’s nice up there this time of year,’ he said smiling.
Tied for 66th when he signed his scorecard Sunday, McIlroy said the swelling around the strained tendon above his right wrist was down, though he has some soreness in the pronator muscle moving up toward his elbow. He had a smaller wrap around his wrist on Sunday and said overall he reports feeling better.
McIlroy plans to rent in the Jupiter area next year while looking to buy a place there.
