JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Tied for 49th and battling a balky putter, Rory McIlroy remained upbeat about his chances of contending at the season’s final major championship.
“If I didn’t feel I could contend I probably would not be playing,” he said.
In fact, despite a heat index near triple digits, McIlroy planned to spend some time on Atlanta Athletic Club’s practice putting green. “It’s probably the only thing I can do right now is hit some putts.”
As for Saturday, McIlroy seemed optimistic about playing the rest of the week. He’s currently at 3 over par but the cut is likely to jump to 4 over or more.
“As long as it doesn’t feel any worse then I should be fine,” he said.
