There’s more word today that European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie won’t have to create controversy before the matches begin by picking between Justin Rose and Paul Casey as a substitute for injured Lee Westwood.
The news on Westwood keeps getting better. He walked 18 holes in a charity event in Edinburgh in Scotland today. He’s recovering from a ruptured calf muscle and hasn’t played in a tournament since the WGC-Bridgestone six weeks ago.
“If the Ryder Cup was this week, I’d be playing, so that’s good news,” Westwood was quoted saying in a story on the Irish Times web site. “I’m just trying to edge my way into it gradually. I don’t want any flare-ups, I’m still cautious about it, but I’ve no problem with it now - no pain for about three or four weeks.”
The Ryder Cup’s start is 11 days away in Wales.
