Rain and rules at TPC

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Despite nearly an inch of overnight rain and the looming threat of Hurricane Nicole officials at the Golf Channel Am Tour’s National Championship did not play preferred lies for Wednesday’s final round.

Not that the Stadium Course, which was fitted with a state-of-the-art drainage system a few years back, required such a move, but your correspondent has covered enough March Players to know that Tour officials would have played the golf ball “up” on Wednesday for no other reason than to keep dissent to a minimum.

The move on Wednesday in north Florida reminds “Shag Bag” of an exchange between a reporter and U.S. Golf Association official a few years back. When the official was asked if they intended to play lift, clean and place the official deadpanned, “No, we’re going to play golf.”
