After bringing the PGA Championship to the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, South Carolina officials want to stage more majors there. They’re aggressively pursuing the PGA of America and the U.S. Golf Association.
Pete Dye’s bunker-less (well, according to the PGA of America, anyway), windswept layout drew praise from many players, including Tiger Woods.
‘I like what this golf course has, and it’s just a wonderful piece of property,’ Woods said.
Phil Mickelson also said he enjoyed the course but pointed out the biggest obstacle for future events at Kiawah, according to The Associated Press. Charleston, S.C., is close to an hour away, and many fans had to park in lots off the island and be bused in.
‘They had to park a long ways away, they had to take a big bus ride in, and you walk this difficult course, and you don’t get to see much action,’ Mickelson said. ‘We are very appreciative of what the fans here go through because it’s not the easiest venue for them to watch and observe.’
