The PGA Tour announced on Thursday that the RBC Heritage will be the ninth regular-season Championship Series event beginning in 2028.
The RBC Heritage, which has been played at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, S.C., since 1969, has been a signature event and was expected to be among the 23 to 24 events – including the four major championships, The Players Championship, two post-finale events and the international cup competitions – that will make up the circuit’s top-tier tournaments beginning in ’28.
“It is an incredible honor for the RBC Heritage to be a part of the PGA Tour Championship Series,” said Steve Wilmot, the RBC Heritage’s tournament director. “This recognition reflects the strength of our tournament and the support of RBC, Boeing, our sponsors, volunteers, and loyal fans.”
At last week’s Tour Championship, Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said that four additional regular-season Championship Series events had been “identified” and that the circuit was in “active discussions” with 14 potential “partners” for the final four top-tier events.
The RBC Heritage will join the Truist Championship, Cadillac Championship at Doral, Travelers Championship, Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Memorial, The Sentry, The GO by Raymond James (formerly the Wyndham Championship) and a new event that will be sponsored by Japan-based Sompo as Championship Series events.
The full 2028 schedule will be announced on Feb. 22.
The Genesis Invitational and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am are currently signature events but have not been announced as Championship Series events, and the Tour has also been clear in its desire to add major markets like Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C., to the new schedule.
