BMW extends title sponsorship through 2019


BMW announced Tuesday that it has extended its title sponsorship of the PGA Tour's BMW Championship through 2019.

The event dates back to 1899 as the Western Open and has been sponsored by BMW since 2007, when it became the third leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. After years at Cog Hill outside Chicago, the tournament has rotated venues recently, with Rory McIlroy winning at Crooked Stick in Indiana in 2012 and Zach Johnson taking home the trophy last year at Conway Farms in Lake Forest, Ill. This year the top 70 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings will head to Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colo., Sept. 4-7, while a venue for 2015 has yet to be announced.

"Since becoming title sponsor of this historic tournament, BMW not only has been committed to elevating the stature of the BMW Championship as a playoff event, but also supporting the WGA and the Evans Scholars Foundation," said PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem as part of a media release. "BMW has been a terrific partner of both the PGA Tour and WGA, and we very much look forward to continuing this collaboration over the next five years.

The announcement comes on the heels of BMW's extension with the European Tour announced last week, whereby it will continue to sponsor three events through 2018: the BMW Masters in China, the BMW International Open in Germany and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, where McIlroy overcame a seven-shot, final-round deficit to win on Sunday.
