In the end, though, there was more pain as her reward.
After finding her lay-up shot in a divot at the third extra hole, Lewis couldn’t get the clean shot she wanted, thumping a wedge short of the 18th green, where she couldn’t get up and down for par.
Lewis, who battled hard in windy, changing conditions much of the day, lost the playoff when Brittany Lincicome two-putted for par.
It was the fourth time this year Lewis has given herself a chance to win on Sunday and come up short. She finished second in three of those tries, third in the other. Lewis has won three times over the last two seasons with nine second-place finishes.
“The initial reaction is disappointed, obviously,” Lewis said. “But I played great, and I hit some really good putts there, especially at the end. Made a great putt on 17. I just played solid all day, so I have to remind myself of that and not get too frustrated. It just wasn't quite meant to be today.”
Lewis has dealt with her share of divots this season. At the JTBC Founders Cup two weeks ago, she came to the 18th hole needing a birdie to tie Hyo Joo Kim and found herself in a divot in the middle of the fairway. She finished second there.
Sunday at Mission Hills, Lewis found herself in an even more difficult lie with a trophy on the line.
“It was right in the middle of the sand-filled divot, and it was a pretty narrow one, so I knew it was going to come out heavy,” Lewis said. “Just right when the club came down, it caught both sides of the divot, basically of the turf, and it just killed it. I got no good contact on the ball, killed all the momentum.”
Helped kill Lewis’ chances, too.
