Landry sports new sponsor, rallies to sit one back

OAKMONT, Pa. – All of the added exposure this week has led to a new sponsor on Andrew Landry’s right shirt sleeve.

Landry showed up for his second round of the U.S. Open with a Moonshine Sweet Tea patch on his white shirt.

Previously, the 624th-ranked player in the world had the name of only one sponsor, Oxford Golf, on his left breast.

Of his new shirt, and sponsor, Landry said with a smile, “Picked them up and patched them up during the day (Friday).”

Landry said he has a longtime friend back home in Austin, Texas, who works at Moonshine Sweet Tea.

“He’s always supported me,” he said, “and I wanted to help promote his stuff.”

After three weather delays Thursday, Landry hit only one shot, a 10-foot putt, to complete his opening round of 66. He spent the rest of the day with friends and family, shaved his beard because his fiancée, Elizabeth, instructed him to, and then worked for about an hour on the range at Oakmont.

“There was so much time off,” he said, “that you just wanted to get out to the course and play.”

Landry didn’t return to the course until 7:11 a.m. Saturday, by which time he was joined at the top of the leaderboard by Dustin Johnson, who shot 67-69.

Landry got off to a shaky start in his second round, going out in 39. But he rebounded with an inward 32, including birdies on his last two holes, to salvage a round of 71 and sit just one shot back of Johnson heading into the final two rounds.

In the final group along with Scott Piercy, Landry will be giving up about 30 yards off the tee to Johnson. Not that he’ll be fazed.

“I’m not the player that’s going to go out and shoot 28 under par,” he said. “I’ve never been that guy, so I’m always going to just dink it around there and make pars and throw in a couple of birdies.”

Though unknown to most fans, Landry is neither surprised nor overwhelmed by his position through 36 holes.

“It’s about time that I’m up there,” he said.
