Troy Merritt doesn't have much experience atop PGA Tour leaderboards, but he didn't shy from the spotlight Saturday at the RBC Heritage. Here's how things look after three rounds at Harbour Town, where Merritt leads by three shots:
What it means: Merritt began the day with a four-shot lead and appeared to be heading back toward the pack after a double bogey on No. 8. That turned out to be his lone blemish of the day, though, as the 29-year-old turned in a 2-under 69 to carry a three-shot lead into the final round as he looks to close out his first win.
Round of the day: Todd was well off the pace after an opening-round 73, but he turned in a 66 during the second round and followed that with an 8-under 63. A winner last year in Dallas, Todd had eight birdies against no bogeys, including a stretch of four birdies in five holes from Nos. 5-9.
Best of the rest: Like Todd, Garnett started slowly but has now gone 66-65 over the past two rounds. His third-round effort included birdies on each of his first two holes, and Garnett had six total circles on his scorecard without dropping a shot.
Biggest disappointment: Graeme McDowell appeared in position to contend for his second tartan jacket, but a 1-under 70 likely leaves him too far back heading into the final round. McDowell was undone on the front nine, where he failed to make a single birdie en route to a 2-over 38. At 8 under, he trails Merritt by six shots.
Main storyline heading into Sunday: The story continues to be Merritt, who had only one prior top-25 finish this season before vaulting into contention with a second-round 61. He displayed some understandable nerves during the third round, and while he ultimately steeled himself he does have a pair of former Heritage winners close behind in Kuchar and Furyk.
Shot of the day: Todd was short of the 18th green with his final approach, but he used a pitching wedge and watched as his chip rolled in for an unexpected birdie. It was his eighth birdie of the day and gave him the low third-round score by two shots.
Quote of the day: "I was hot early with my ball-striking, then I finally started to make some putts on No. 3." - Todd
