Dustin Johnson’s ball moved on the green at No. 5, but it looked like he didn’t cause the ball to move, thus no penalty. He conferred with an official, was told he was in the clear, and made par.
However, a USGA official approached DJ on the tee at No. 12 and told him they would discuss the ruling after the round.
Johnson’s fellow pros were not pleased with how the situation was handled.
Lemme get this straight.. DJ doesn't address it. It's ruled that he didn't cause it to move. Now you tell him he may have? Now? This a joke?
— Jordan Spieth (@JordanSpieth) June 19, 2016
This is ridiculous... No penalty whatsoever for DJ. Let the guy play without this crap in his head. Amateur hour from @USGA
— Rory McIlroy (@McIlroyRory) June 19, 2016
USGA not helping DJ - he needs clarity at this stage of the round not doubt as to the ruling
— Paul McGinley (@mcginleygolf) June 19, 2016
.@JordanSpieth @McIlroyRory w/ you boys! The fact that the @usga thinks that DJ caused the ball to move is completely ridiculous! Laughable!
— Rickie Fowler (@RickieFowler) June 19, 2016
That rule HAS TO change @USGA, PLEASE!
— Webb Simpson (@webbsimpson1) June 19, 2016
This isn't right for anyone on that golf course. If it was me I wouldn't hit another shot until this farce was rectified.
— Rory McIlroy (@McIlroyRory) June 19, 2016
No way DJ gets a penalty. Use some common sense @usga The greens are running 14 and are sloppier than Mount Everest
— Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) June 19, 2016
This DJ thing is ridiculous! He didn't sit his putter down. USGA needs to settle down!
— D.A. Points (@DAPoints) June 19, 2016
Hey @usopengolf @USGA do not make the mistake of penalizing Dustin, he did NOTHING to cause ball to move.
— Webb Simpson (@webbsimpson1) June 19, 2016
Have you seen how much these putts are breaking @usga, the green speed and slope caused the ball to move. #moveon
— Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) June 19, 2016
This is bad @USGA! Let Dustin play without this in his head. It's up to him whether or not he made the ball move. Come on!!
— Hudson Swafford (@Hud_swafford) June 19, 2016
Just let DJ play in peace @usga. We all know it's not a penalty. #USOpen
— Danielle Kang (@daniellekang) June 19, 2016
@USGA treatment of @DJohnsonPGA absolutely shocking. No way he made the ball move.
— Ernie Els (@TheBig_Easy) June 19, 2016
Agree... RT @LukeDonald: Have you seen how much these putts are breaking @usga, the green speed and slope caused the ball to move. #moveon
— Camilo Villegas (@CamiloVillegasR) June 19, 2016
Aren't rules of golf based on the honor system? @USGA relying on crutch of instant replay? How is that fair when not every shot is taped?
— Will Strickler (@wstrick17) June 19, 2016
This is so simple, yet the @usga is making it so convoluted. Only way ball can move backwards is if DJ grounded his putter. He didn't
— Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) June 19, 2016
Fact: the rule was changed a couple years ago for just such a situation. This is clouding the championship https://t.co/QzEKGMuUgu
— Olin Browne (@OlinBrowne) June 19, 2016
Gosh, I really hope this plays out the right way. Dustin has had some serious heartbreak, but this is something I've never seen in sports b4
— Beau Hossler (@beauhossler) June 19, 2016
They need to stop play here and make a call on this DJ situation. Players need to know what they have to do.
— Graeme McDowell (@Graeme_McDowell) June 19, 2016
Come on @usga. It's been a fun week to watch golf... Don't screw it up... What a joke. Come on @djohnsonpga
— Camilo Villegas (@CamiloVillegasR) June 19, 2016
Hey Lebron! We will tell you after Game 7 if you won or not. Just keep playing then we will figure the score
— Kristy McPherson (@KRISTY2208) June 19, 2016
I agree! I'd have a hard time... https://t.co/BkPaPAPBB4
— Jessica Korda (@Thejessicakorda) June 19, 2016
What a joke with this DJ drama
— Brian Gay (@BrianGayPGA) June 19, 2016
Wow @USGA wow.
— Keegan Bradley (@Keegan_Bradley) June 19, 2016
There's a guy playing the final 6 holes of a Major Championship not knowing what his score is. Is this real life?
— Roberto Castro (@cicioCASTRO) June 19, 2016
USGA they roll the greens 3 times. Double cut them. What else could cause it to move. How bout gravity!! So bad it's sickening
— Mark Calcavecchia (@MarkCalc) June 19, 2016
Happiest guy in golf right now is Tom O'Toole...PAST President of the USGA. #USOpen
— Joe Ogilvie (@ogilviej) June 19, 2016
The @USGA are creating an incredibly anti-climatic scenario here during what should be an incredibly dramatic back nine on Sunday. Sort it.
— Graeme McDowell (@Graeme_McDowell) June 19, 2016
This comes from the same people that told us driving distance hasn't increased.....
— Trevor Immelman (@TrevorImmelman) June 19, 2016
Hogan's ghost must have caused that ball move because pretty sure @DJohnsonPGA didn't make it move. Figure it out @USGA
— Andres Gonzales (@Andres_Gonzales) June 19, 2016
What is the USGA up to? Are they trying to say DJ is lying about what happened and now they think he should be hit with penalty. Not funny
— Stuart Appleby (@StuartAppleby) June 19, 2016
Hey @USGA, it's impossible for DJ to cause the ball to move backwards!!!!!!! #commonsense
— Brandt Snedeker (@BrandtSnedeker) June 19, 2016
