Spieth on ceremony: ‘Stood up there and smiled like I should’

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Not only did Jordan Spieth lose the green jacket, he had to stick around afterward for a ceremony to present the jacket to Danny Willett, the man Spieth had essentially helped an hour before, via an Amen Corner collapse.

Moments after he signed for a 73, Spieth answered questions politely on television while he fought back tears of frustration that go with such a devastating defeat. Then he went quickly to Butler Cabin for the historic green jacket presentation.

“I can’t think of anybody else who may have had a tougher ceremony to experience,” Spieth said. “Obviously very happy for Danny. More important than golf, he’s had a lot of really cool thinks happened in his life. Like he said, ‘maybe fate had it this time for him.’ I certainly wanted to control fate myself.

“But it was very tough given that it’s so soon after the finish and it was tough but I thought that he handled it with extreme class. And I felt that I stood up there and smiled like I should, and appreciated everybody who makes this great tournament possible.”
