Both Fred Couples and Bernard Langer’s resumes this season boast three victories and seven top-10s on the 50-and-older circuit.
The German’s victory at last week’s Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie gave him the edge over Freddie in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. But it could just be a matter of days before Couples takes back the No. 1 spot.
Couples skipped the Champions Tour’s second major last week, opting to stay stateside to prepare for his duties as the honorary chairman of the 2010 U.S. Senior Open at Sahalee in the Seattle suburb of Sammamish.
Couples, a Seattle native, is a fan favorite no matter where he plays, but this could be a big week at home for the Champions Tour rookie. This is Couples’ first appearance in a Senior U.S. Open but he’s played 23 U.S. Opens with his best finish a tie for third in 1991 at Hazeltine.
As long as his back stays well we could see Couples back in control on the Champions Tour and with his first USGA title as a pro.
