For the second time in his tenure as Commander-in-Chief, President Barack Obama will serve as Honorary Chairman of the Presidents Cup when the biennial event returns this fall to the U.S., the PGA Tour announced Friday.
Obama’s participation continues a tradition of various heads of state serving in honorary capacities for the event that will pit a 12-man team from the U.S. against a team comprised of international players from outside of Europe. Having already served as Honorary Chairman in 2009 when the matches were held at Harding Park in San Francisco, Obama will become the first dignitary to fill the role at multiple editions of the event.
‘We are truly honored that President Obama has once again accepted our invitation to be Honorary Chairman of the Presidents Cup in October,’ PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said as part of the release. ‘His involvement again this year serves to only further enhance the stature of the Presidents Cup and the game of golf as a whole.’
In its 10th iteration this year, the Presidents Cup will be held at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio from October 1-6. The U.S. currently holds a 7-1-1 overall advantage, having won 19-15 in 2011 when the matches were held in Australia.
