Addressing the rules ... and ball: Not yet in effect

MELBOURNE, Australia – Ran into U.S. Golf Association executive director Mike Davis at the 14th hole and felt compelled to ask about the most recent change to the Rules of Golf given Friday's wind-whipped conditions.

The adjustment allows for a ball moving on the green after a player has addressed it when the movement was caused by wind.

'Another,' paused Davis, a walking rules official at the Presidents Cup, to look at his watch, 'six weeks. The change is Jan. 1.'

The combination of fast greens and 30 mph gusts have created the danger of such an infraction on Day 2 at Royal Melbourne.

'It's tough,' said American assistant captain John Cook. 'That grass is like ice.'

Yes, ice in a wind tunnel.
