Hurricane Matthew swept through the eastern Caribbean and southeastern U.S. last week, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake that included over 1,000 deaths and millions of people in need of humanitarian assistance.

Justin Thomas, a Jupiter, Fla., resident, is doing his part to help relief efforts, stating on his Twitter and Instagram accounts that he would be donating $250 for every birdie he makes in the next three events he plays, starting this week at the Safeway Open.

Thomas, who made an average of 3.75 birdies per round last season, also urged others to join the cause and help make a difference. The donations will start adding up Thursday in Napa, Calif.
