This June 20, 1955 file photo shows the heartbreaking finish to Ben Hogan’s bid to be the first man to win five U.S. Open championships in San Francisco. He’s trying to blast the ball onto the 18th fairway from the deep rough into which he hooked his tee shot. It took him three to get out and he finally got down six while his opponent, Jack Fleck took a par four for a 69 and victory in the 18-hole playoff by three strokes.
