Megan Khang had to get a question off her chest.
So much so that she crashed Charley Hull’s post-round interview at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship to ask it.
Did beating Khang in singles at the Solheim Cup two weeks ago give Hull the confidence needed to shoot a 6-under 65 on Friday at Pinnacle Country Club?
“Yeah, it made me very, very confident knowing that I beat you, Megan,” said Hull, who was playing behind Khang during the opening round in Rogers, Arkansas.
“It made me feel really confident as well that you was in front of me, comfortable as well knowing that my friend was in front of me as well,” she added. “Even though you held me up on a couple holes.”
Hull, who opened with four birdies on her first six holes on Friday, told reporters she didn’t hit a golf ball for five straight days last week while recovering from the flu.
Her sickness was so bad she said she nearly pulled out of the tournament this week feeling she wasn’t prepared enough.
However, since arriving in the U.S. Tuesday night, those fears have dissipated.
“It wasn’t really the best prep, but actually I come in here with no expectations and felt like I hit it pretty well tee-to-green and putted decent,” she said.
The stretch of bad health for Hull stemmed back to her weekend at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands, where she had to miss celebrating with European teammates who had just won the Solheim Cup.
Hull revealed that she had tonsillitis over the final two days of competition and was feeling so poorly that she went to bed early after the big win.
“I literally got back and went down the team room for food and went to bed. My boyfriend was drunk, so wanted to stay at the party. I was like, ‘you can stay at the party instead of coming to bed with me.’ He was really drunk. A lot of the team was drunk. It was great night.”
Hull might not have delivered the highlight memories from her post-Solheim celebrations, but her presser Friday still had plenty of color — starting with a question from a fellow player and ending with one about the darker shade of hair Hull has been sporting recently.
The decision behind the color change came from an unusual yet familiar place for anyone who has ever dated.
“I don’t know, I just felt like I wanted to do it,” Hull responded before revealing her boyfriend didn’t want her to do it.
“So that made me want to do it more,” she added. “I done it, and then I kind of regretted it. Now I’m kind of liking it.”
And for anyone missing her traditional, lighter locks they won’t have to wait very long for her to switch back.
“I will go back to blonde hopefully just after Christmas,” Hull announced.
