Baseballs Bonds to Hit the Links in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds will play in the 20th annual Juan Marichal Golf Classic in the Dominican Republic next week.

Bonds will be the main attraction at the Jan. 21-23 tournament, Marichal said Thursday.

Tournament proceeds go to the needy in Marichal’s native Dominican Republic.

Bonds, who missed most of the season after knee surgery, returned in September to hit .286 with five homers and 10 RBIs in 42 at-bats. Bonds has 708 career homers, trailing only Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714).

Marichal led the National League in complete games and shutouts twice, and in 1969 led the league with a 2.10 ERA. Marichal completed 244 games during his 16-year career, striking out 2,303 and finishing with a 2.89 ERA.

Marichal was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.
