Wie Withdraws from Hawaii Open Cites Injury

HONOLULU -- Michelle Wie has withdrawn from this weekend’s Hawaii Pearl Open because of a pulled left forearm muscle.

Wie’s father, B.J. Wie, said Thursday that the 15-year-old star’s injury - sustained in practice - is not serious.

``Michelle still feels some minor pain in her left wrist and her doctor recommended that she rest until the pain is gone,’' B.J. Wie said. ``This is the first time Michelle has ever withdrawn from a tournament. I hope that everyone understands that we are being cautious to avoid any reoccurrence in the future.’'

Last year, Wie closed with an even-par 72 to tie for 38th at 2-under 214. She was the only female player in the field of 192.

``I’m very, very sad that I will not be able to play,’' Wie said. ``The Hawaii Pearl Open is a very special tournament to me. I was really looking forward to it.’'

Wie expects to be fully recovered by her next tournament, the LPGA Tour’s SBS Open in Hawaii on Feb. 24-26.
