Thumbnail

Norman Xiong won the Western Amateur on Saturday the hard way - blowing a 4-up lead, then winning on the fourth playoff hole.

Xiong, a sophomore at Oregon, defeated Doc Redman, a sophomore at Clemson. The match, played at Skokie Country Club in Glencoe, Ill., ended when Redman missed a 12-foot putt for par.

Xiong dominated early, jumping to a 4-up lead after nine holes but Redman erased the deficit by the 17th hole. Redman lipped out a potential winning putt on the 18th hole, and Xiong did the same on the first extra hole.
