With Patrick Rodgers and Matt Fitzpatrick making their pro debuts this week, there is a new No. 1-ranked amateur in the world: Ollie Schniederjans.

The rising senior at Georgia Tech assumed the top spot in the R&A’s World Amateur Rankings. Schniederjans, who turned 21 this week, won a school-record five times for the Yellow Jackets this past season. He has already announced that he is coming back for his senior season.

The No. 2-ranked amateur in the world is Alabama sophomore Robby Shelton, followed by incoming Texas freshman Scottie Scheffler, the 2013 U.S. Junior champion. Chang-woo Lee and Gavin Green round out the top 5.

The No. 1 ranking is an important deal for amateurs. The player who holds the top spot in August, after the U.S. Amateur, will receive the McCormack Medal. Among other things, that clinches a berth in both the U.S. and British Opens.

This week, Schniederjans is playing the Web.com Tour’s Air Capital Classic on a sponsor exemption.
