TPC River Highlands

This week the PGA TOUR returns to TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., for the Travelers Championship.

GCSAA Class A Golf Course Superintendent Thomas DeGrandi, a three-time GCSAA/Golf Digest Environmental Leaders in Golf Award winner, has eased up on the rough this year, cutting it at 2 - 3 inches instead of the usual four-inch height. A cool spring with temperatures falling 10-15 degrees below average flipped around last week to 20-25 degrees above average for five straight days, keeping DeGrandi on his toes. He has been expanding the native rough recently with wildflowers, which has increased the bird population at the golf course. DeGrandi points to No. 15, a short par 4 with water left, trees right and a small undulating green that can fall off the back, as a key hole which can be a birdie or a double bogey just as easily.
