CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Rory McIlroy didn’t give himself the birthday present he wanted Sunday at the Wells Fargo Championship.
With a 2-under-par 70, he earned himself yet another top 10, tying for eighth, but he wasn’t overly excited about it.
“Top ten-ing every week is fine, whatever,” McIlroy said. “You just want wins. It’s another solid week, but they’re top 10s without really getting in contention. I don’t want to just backdoor top-10 it every week. OK, it’s nice, you pick up a nice paycheck, but it doesn’t really get the adrenalin going. I’d much rather be in the mix.”

McIlroy was serenaded around Quail Hollow on his 25th birthday. He appreciated it, but he was disappointed he couldn’t mount a run at his seventh PGA Tour title.
That’s three consecutive top-10 finishes now for McIlroy, five in seven starts this year in PGA Tour stroke-play events. He’s frustrated, however, that his only chance to win among them was his second-place finish at the Honda Classic.
“It’s solid,” McIlroy said. “It’s not really what I want, but it’s going in the right direction. I feel like I’m improving a little bit each and every week and, you know, hopefully one of these weeks it will all come together for me.”
