CHARLOTTE, N.C. – As preparation for hosting the PGA Championship in 2017, Quail Hollow Golf Club underwent a significant makeover this past year.
Quail Hollow officials should take it as a strong sign they’ve got the right formula going with Angel Cabrera immediately leaping onto the leaderboard Thursday at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Cabrera, with both of his PGA Tour titles coming in major championships, posted a 6-under-par 66 to take the early lead in the first round. Cabrera won his first major at Oakmont, taking the U.S. Open there in 2007. He won his second at Augusta National, taking the Masters in ’09.

Quail Hollow brought out the best in him.
“I played very well on the greens,” Cabrera said. “And I saved myself on the holes that I didn’t play so well.”
Cabrera rode a hot putter atop the leaderboard. He needed just 24 putts on Thursday. He only hit 11 greens but kept getting up and down.
