This year marks the 10-year anniversary of Michael Campbell’s stunning U.S. Open title.
It’s never seemed further away.
Playing his first event in a year because of injury and personal problems, Campbell bowed out of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship after only nine holes.
He was 6 over at the turn before withdrawing, citing personal problems.
The now-45-year-old’s world ranking has tanked to No. 1434. Though he showed signs of life with back-to-back top-20s in early 2013, he has missed 15 of his last 17 cuts.
The U.S. Open returned to Pinehurst last June, but he pulled out of the event a month prior. He said he had been bothered by a left ankle injury, but he also announced that he had recently separated from his wife.
