Day ‘frustrated’ with putter, opens with 69 at Zurich

AVONDALE, La. – Before the five-hour delay, Jason Day was sitting at 4 under par, cruising along at the Zurich Classic.

Then he had to come back to complete two and a half holes.

The world No. 1 two-putted for birdie once play resumed, but he bogeyed the last two holes to sign for a 3-under 69 that soured his day.

“Clearly a little frustrated,” he said, “but looking forward to tomorrow.”

Day made a 60-foot bomb and went out in 31 to share the early lead, but he missed a 7-footer on No. 1 (his 10th), a 5-footer on 4, a 4-footer on 8 and then three-putted the last. He took 33 putts in all.

“It’s under par,” he said. “That’s all I can really take from it.”
