For the second year in a row, Rory McIlroy’s fans in Ireland won’t be seeing him on the weekend.
McIlroy rallied on Friday for a 2-under 69 at the Irish Open, but he came up a stroke short of the 36-hole cut.
“It’s frustrating,” McIlroy said. “I left myself with a lot of work to do after yesterday.”
The No. 6 player in the world opened with a 74 in the first round, and he nearly fought back Friday to make the cut. McIlroy made six birdies and an eagle, but he hurt himself with a double bogey on the par-5 fourth and bogeys on Nos. 8, 9, 12 and 16.
The big mistakes have been a common theme this season for McIlroy.
“I just need to tighten it all up and become more consistent,” he said.
Up until this week, McIlroy’s results have been pretty consistent. This is his first missed cut of the season, and the first time he’s finished outside of the top 25.
