PINEHURST, N.C. – Rolex world No. 1 Stacy Lewis closed hard Sunday in her bid to win her first U.S. Women’s Open.

She made eight birdies in her round of 4-under-par 66, more birdies than any man or woman made competing in a U.S. Open or U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst No. 2. She equaled Catriona Matthew as the low round of the day.

But even closing with back-to-back birdies, Lewis was left on the practice putting green watching Michelle Wie close out a two-shot victory.

“I wasn’t surprised, just knowing Michelle Wie and the way she grinds and hangs in there, I wasn’t surprised at all,” Lewis said.

After a bogey at the first, Lewis was seven shots back, but when Wie double bogeyed the 16th, Lewis was just a shot back. The second-place finish is Lewis’ best in eight U.S. Women’s Open appearances.

“You can’t ask for a better finish,” Lewis said. “And just really proud of myself the way I hung in there, and just came back after the last couple of days.”
