FORT WORTH, Texas – It won’t be surprising if Webb Simpson still finds some sand in his shoes, even hours after completing his third round at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational.
Simpson is in the mix at Colonial Country Club after successfully navigating a stretch on the back nine where during which his approach shot found a greenside bunker on four straight holes.
He played the stretch remarkably in even par, canceling a bogey on No. 13 with a hole-out birdie from 40 feet on No. 14, en route to his third straight round of 67 or better.

While a closing bogey on No. 18, after finding yet another bunker, cost him a share of the lead, his bunker prowess is a big reason why he trails Jordan Spieth by only one shot heading into the final round.
“It was quite a lot. That’s what this course will do to you, though,” Simpson said. “If you’re a little off, balls go in those bunkers. You honestly hope for bunker shots out here because the rough’s so tricky.”
Simpson held a share of the lead with Martin Piller once the rain-delayed second round was completed Saturday morning, and he now has a chance for his first win since the 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
“I would say winning’s always important, but what I’m looking forward to tomorrow is the challenge of staying present and playing as good as I can, and when I make the turn still have a chance to win,” he said. “That’s what I’m shooting for.”
