Georgia Tech senior Ollie Schniederjans on Thursday was named the recipient of the McCormack Medal as the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world. The honor comes with a nice perk: berths in the 2015 U.S. Open and British Open, provided he remains amateur.
Schniederjans won a school-record five times last season for the Yellow Jackets and lost in a playoff at the NCAA Championship, and he returns to school as the player to beat in college golf.
Earlier this month, the 21-year-old from Powder Springs, Ga., reached the Round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur, where he was upset by eventual winner Gunn Yang. At the Palmer Cup this summer, he earned a team-best three points (out of four possible).
“I’m very excited about this accomplishment,” he said. “It is something I believed I could achieve. I have gotten better every year since I got to college and hope to continue that in the future.”
Schniederjans will skip the World Amateur Team Championship next month to focus on school and his final season in Atlanta.
