It’s crunch time on the Nationwide Tour as the tour heads into south Florida for the last full-field event of the season, the Miccosukee Championship.
After 29 tournaments there are some very important spots still available as the players descend on the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club in Miami, many trying to finish in one of several categories that could improve their pocket books this year and next.
Here’s a look at what they will be playing for this week and at next week’s Tour Championship:
Four of the five players who have two victories on the season are entered in the field and a third win would give them the PGA Tour’s Battlefield Promotion, although it would pretty much be a moot point as each has all but locked up their PGA Tour cards for 2005. Plus, their would be just one full field event remaining on the the PGA Tour’s schedule, the Chrysler Championship in Tampa.
Jimmy Walker still leads the money list and he will likely hold on to that top spot, unless either D.A. Points or Ryuji Imada - who rank second and third on the list - can pull out a victory.
Last year, Craig Bowden, who despite making bogey on two of his last four holes in the final round, managed to hang on and win the Miccosukee Championship by one stroke.
The victory propelled him into the Tour Championship where he then secured his card for the 2004 PGA Tour. Currently, he stands 132nd on the PGA Tour money list after making 12 of 25 cuts and posting one top-10 finish.
In just its second year on the Nationwide Tour schedule, the Miccosukee Championship offers a purse of $450,000 with $81,500 going to the winner.
