BROOKLINE, Mass. – Watching along the rope line for much of this week, U.S. Walker Cup captain Jim Holtgrieve got an up-close look at Matt Fitzpatrick.

He’ll see the world’s No. 1-ranked amateur in a few weeks, too.

There was never really a doubt, of course, but Fitzpatrick sealed his spot on the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team with his 4-and-3 victory in Sunday’s 36-hole final at The Country Club. The biennial event will be held Sept. 7-8 at National Golf Links of America.

The 10-man GB&I team will be announced Monday, and Fitzpatrick, the first Englishman in more than a century to win the U.S. Amateur, will be the top draw among the visitors.

“It’s pretty much the highest thing that you can do,” Fitzpatrick said of being selected to the team. “The atmosphere, I think, will be incredible. It’s going to be a fun week.”
