GULLANE, Scotland – Lee Westwood always knew that a move to the U.S. would be beneficial for his game. Others here in Great Britain questioned the decision, wondering why, at 40 years old, Westwood would uproot his family for the last decade of his PGA Tour playing career.
Westwood moved to South Florida last winter so he could practice all year in warmer conditions, something that seems to have worked now that he’s in position to win his first major championship.
“I’d hoped that living in that kind of climate and having access to great golf courses and faster greens and stuff like that and practice facilities, that it was going to help my game,” Westwood said. “So far this year I’ve contended, you pick out the big tournaments … I’ve contended in all of them.
“And now the Open Championship. So, you’d have to say it’s worked to a certain extent in a positive way for my game.”
Westwood tied for eighth at the Masters and The Players and tied for ninth at the BMW PGA Championship, the European Tour’s signature event. He tied for 15th place at the U.S. Open.
