GULLANE, Scotland – Sergio Garcia finished his third round before the final group of leaders teed off Saturday at the British Open.
“El Nino” had gone fairly unnoticed for most of the week, especially with rounds of 75-73 the first two days.
On Saturday, however, Garcia went out and shot a spiffy 3-under 68, which was tied for the lowest round of the day when he had finished. Richard Sterne also shot 68.

“Finally felt like I knew what I was doing out there,” Garcia said. “I was finally able to hit some good shots and was able to trust my shots a little bit better. Thanks to that, I was able to score nicely.”
Mostly, Garcia got his putter working better for him. The greens were watered heavily overnight, making them more receptive, but Garcia still managed to record six birdies on a Muirfield course that isn’t too keen to allow them.
Garcia stands at 3 over overall, which was tied for 20th place. His position will likely improve as conditions get more difficult in the afternoon for the leaders.
