Jennifer Johnson made the biggest move in the American Solheim Cup standings with her tie for seventh Sunday at the Marathon Classic outside Toledo, Ohio.
Johnson cracked through the qualifying standard but must hold her spot through the final week of qualifying to grab one of the USA’s 10 automatic roster spots.
Next week’s Ricoh Women’s British Open stands as the last chance for players to qualify. A lot of movement is still possible with double points up for grabs at St. Andrews. The American and European teams will be announced a couple hours after the conclusion of the Women’s British Open on Aug. 4. The Solheim Cup is scheduled Aug. 16-18 at Colorado Golf Club outside Denver.
Eight Americans will make the team off the U.S. Solheim Cup points standings along with the two highest ranked Americans in the Rolex Women’s World Rankings who aren’t already qualified on points. Captain Meg Mallon also gets two at-large roster picks.
With her strong finish Sunday, Johnson leaped past Solheim Cup veteran Morgan Pressel to assume the second world ranking spot, but the rankings race is close. Johnson is now No. 51 in the world and Pressel No. 52.
If the U.S. team were settled today, four Americans would qualify for their first U.S. Solheim Cup team: Lexi Thompson, Jessica Korda, Lizette Salas and Johnson.
The possibility of a large turnover of the American roster looms. As of this week, six Americans from the last U.S. Solheim Cup team have not yet qualified: Pressel, Michelle Wie, Juli Inkster, Christina Kim, Vicky Hurst and Ryann O’Toole.
Here is how the race shapes up:
