DORAL, Fla. – Lee Westwood is hot on Martin Kaymer’s heels in the battle for No. 1 in the world rankings at the WGC-Cadillac Championship this week.
In the new Official World Golf Rankings projections, No. 2 Westwood can take back the No. 1 ranking with a top-four finish, but he’s the only player in this week’s field who can overtake Kaymer.
The math gets complicated with ties, but here are some scenarios that will allow Westwood to ascend:
If Westwood wins, he reclaims the No. 1 ranking, no matter what Kaymer does . . .
If Westwood finishes second, he moves up if Kaymer is fourth or worse . . .
If Westwood finishes third, he ascends if Kaymer is ninth or worse . . .
If Westwood finishes fourth, he bumps up if Kaymer is 27th or worse . . .
