TURNBERRY, Scotland – As the sun settled over Ailsa Craig a lone group was making its way around the resort’s par-3 course that included former Open champion Todd Hamilton and Briny Baird.
A Hamilton tee shot nestled to 4 feet and drew applause from a passing group, which prompted Hamilton to doff his cap, 72nd-hole style.
The par-3 has become a nightly ritual for Open contender Steve Marino, who slipped on Saturday but is still in the hunt. Marino and his caddie, Gerald “GW” William have a nightly game on the to-scale links.
“He beat me (on Friday),” Marino said.
Note to GW: you may want to let your man build some confidence Saturday night.
