Royal Portrush may be one step closer to hosting an Open Championship in the near future, as the R&A has awarded the 2014 British Amateur to the Northern Ireland course – home of Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke.

‘The Amateur Championship has a proud tradition of being contested over the finest links courses in the British Isles,’ said Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, R&A executive director of championships, in a release also announcing Carnoustie as ’15 host.

Portrush has hosted one Open Championship – in 1951. It held the British Amateur in 1960 and ’93. It also has been home to six Senior Open Championships.

The club also will host the Irish Open this summer.
