Melissa Reid finished her second round 68 at the Sanya Ladies Open in China despite having been bitten by a snake.
The Englishwoman was attacked by the reptile on the 16th hole and underwent treatment from a tournament doctor. After a 20 minute delay she resumed the round, birding the 16th before making pars on both 17 and 18. She told officials she was “okay” but was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
Her caddie, Lee Griffiths recounted the ordeal to Ladies European Tour media officials, “We were on the 16th and Mel said, ‘Oh my God, Lee, I’ve been bitten by a snake!’ It was about six-foot long and jumped at her out of the grass from behind a drain. I saw its fangs and I said, ‘I can see its bitten you because you’re bleeding.’ We had reassurance from the greenkeeper that its not deadly. We were taking the cut through behind the 12th green and it’s a little swampy down there.”
Austria’s Stephanie Michl leads the tournament by two shots over England’s Florentyna Parker. Reid is in a tied for 36th with one round to play in the LET event.
