BETHESDA, Md. – Jordan Spieth’s bid at history fell short on Sunday.
The 19-year-old was bidding to become just the fifth teenager to win a PGA Tour-sanctioned event ever, and the first in 82 years, but after an opening-hole eagle gave him a share of the AT&T National lead, his final-round total of 2-under 69 left him in sixth place for the week.
“I’m just happy to be out here,” he said. “I’m just happy to be playing week in and week out. I’m lucky to have a place to play. The money, it’s nice that it comes with it. I’m trying to get a win, and this is a great step forward for me.”
In 14 starts on the PGA Tour, Spieth now has five top-10 results and has easily eclipsed the $1 million mark. Afterward, he said contending yet again can only give him more confidence going forward.
“Being able to come out here and compete, to call these guys, the best players in the world, kind of my peers is an honor,” he continued. “I like competing. I like feeling the pressure. I like getting nervous. It’s a cool feeling for me. It’s a feeling that it’s so difficult to master. You see a few guys master it.
“Tiger [Woods], I don’t even think, if he was tied for a lead in the major anymore, I don’t even know if he feels pressure. So that’s kind of a point that I want to get to, and the only way to do that is to keep on getting in position.”
