PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Yani Tseng is ailing with a nasty bout of tonsillitis but hopes to play Thursday when the Wegmans LPGA Championship begins.

Tseng told Golfchannel.com Tuesday that her throat and gums are inflamed. She came down with a sore throat on Saturday night, the eve of the final round of the Shoprite Classic. She played the final round ailing but awakened the next day with a fever and worsening pain in her throat and mouth.

“I had a fever over 100 degrees, and I couldn’t eat anything,” Tseng said.

After arriving in Rochester for the Wegmans LPGA Championship, Tseng visited a medical clinic Monday. She said Tuesday afternoon the medication doctors gave her have brought down the fever and she played nine holes in a practice round, but her throat and mouth still ache.

Tseng won the Wegmans LPGA Championship just two years ago in a 10-shot runaway while on a spectacular run of seven LPGA victories that year.

“It hurts a lot right now, but I’m planning to play,” Tseng said of Thursday’s start. “It’s a major championship, and I want to play.”

Tseng is going for her sixth major championship title. At 22, she became the youngest player, male or female, to win five majors.
